Esme respected that Carlisle was trying to make her feel better because surely he was hurting too but neither of them really knew if Edward would come back to them, he felt incredibly guilty and guilt is a tough thing on anyone's shoulders especially Edwards. Esme sunk her back into the pillows, drawing her legs to her chest, a new worry entered her mind, were the Cullen family falling apart? One of the strongest, tight knit covens in the world, might someone else leave and then another until they'd all gone their separate ways.
Esme shook off her delusional concerns, she was being silly, she pulled Carlisle down to lay with her, she nestled into his arms and just quietly watched him as she fiddled with a shirt button. He was thinking, she could tell this much. She found herself able to smile.
"Carlisle?"
"Hm?" he looked down at Esme, his eyes somewhere between golden and onyx. Carlisle's changing eye colour was never a concern to anyone, he had more self control than any other vampire known to existence, his eyes could be a deep black, his throat burning, but the scent of blood still didn't bother him.
"I love you" she smiled, Carlisle smiled too before kissing his wife's forehead gently.
